Red Rocks is open for business after undergoing significant remodeling over winter, including adding a family restroom in its visitors center and revamping Ship Rock Grill to name but a few changes.

Red Rocks Amphitheatre opened in 1941 and quickly became one of the premier musical venues in America, drawing artists of all types due to its natural acoustics and breathtaking surroundings. Many artists have drawn inspiration from its beauty.

The History of Red Rocks Amphitheatre

Amphitheater formations that stand taller than Niagara Falls date back 280 million years and got their name from their reddish hue caused by iron oxides present within.

John Brisben Walker used the fortune he derived from selling Cosmopolitan magazine to build a stage among rocks, inviting musicians to perform there, and calling it Garden of the Titans.

One of the most memorable shows to ever take place at this venue was a Jethro Tull performance in 1971. Following that show, and its subsequent ban of rock music at this venue, was what is still commonly referred to as “Jethro Tull incident”. The entire affair became part of history.

The Venue’s Weather

Red Rocks is an outdoor venue open to the elements. Although Denver residents may be used to this, visitors should still come prepared for all possible weather conditions that may arise – for instance a rainstorm rolled through just prior to a Steely Dan show in 1983 with marble-sized hail that caused them to postpone the concert and call off rehearsals.

An additional factor to take into account when visiting any concert venue is altitude adjustment. At 6,450 feet above sea level, adjusting can take time for concertgoers coming from faraway areas; to help make things easier it is recommended that out-of-town concertgoers drink plenty of water prior to and during performances as well as wear sunscreen on their skin.

Fans are allowed to bring water as well as soft-sided coolers, blankets (up to 18″ wide blankets are allowed), food packaged for security inspection (there are numerous food kiosks around the venue that serve a range of food and drinks) and any soft-sided coolers for cooler.

Amphitheater seating capacities total 9,525 with both general admission seating and reserved seats available to guests. To secure their spot in the GA line – which often begins forming one hour prior to show start times – arriving early is highly advised for optimal experience. Guests may bring food, blankets, soft-sided coolers (less than 18″x12″) with no alcohol content and seat cushions into the venue.
