Jazz Singer Norah Jones

Norah Jones

Norah Jones rose to stardom nearly two decades ago with her debut album Come Away With Me, which went platinum. Since then, she has released multiple albums.

She has expanded her creative range through collaborations with Foo Fighters and Willie Nelson; Visions is no exception.

She grew up in Grapevine, Texas

Norah Jones was born Geethali Norah Shankar in Manhattan but her parents divorced before she could come out of the womb. Raised by her mother Sue Jones in Grapevine, Texas – where her musical repertoire included Etta James, Billie Holiday and Aretha Franklin; in addition to piano and voice lessons.

Jones attended Booker T Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Dallas, singing in their school choir and playing saxophone. Upon graduating high school with honors, she studied jazz at University of North Texas – winning two Down Beat Student Music Awards while co-founding a band with Jesse Harris.

Come Away With Me became an instantaneous success upon its release in 2002, selling over 4 million copies and becoming the best-selling jazz album of the 2000s. It drew praise both from critics and the general public alike.

She moved to New York City in 1999

Norah Jones arrived in New York City during the summer of 1999 and quickly found work as a lounge singer, singing jazz standards in a band called Wax Poetic and performing jazz standards from her repertoire. Peter Malick, director of The Thin Red Line film series heard her perform and decided to approach her for a recording project.

Norah released Come Away With Me as her debut album for Blue Note Records in February 2002 and it quickly became a worldwide phenomenon selling over seven million copies worldwide. Her subsequent releases such as Feels Like Home (2004), Not Too Late (2007), The Fall (2009) and Little Broken Hearts (2012) broadened Norah’s musical scope even further with rock, country, folk and even pop influences being explored within these albums.

Day Breaks, her sixth album, showed that her jazz roots remain strong; it recalls Come Away With Me but displays an artist who has lived life and grown considerably as an artist.

She started The Little Willies in 2003

Norah Jones found her voice when singing with the choir of her local church. Soon thereafter, she took piano and voice lessons as well as jazz piano classes; eventually pursuing jazz music through coffeehouse performances on open-mic nights as her passion. Recognized by jazz magazine Down Beat as an outstanding vocalist both years running, Norah won two Student Music Awards from them both – winning an Award from Down Beat’s Student Music Award both years.

Norah quickly found herself at home in New York City when she joined a collective of talented friends to form The Little Willies band. Composed of Norah on piano keyboards and vocals; Richard Julian on guitar; Jim Campilongo on guitar; Lee Alexander on bass; and Dan Rieser on drums, The Little Willies quickly found its stride performing classic country hits together.

Little Willies recreated some of their favorite songs, such as Jolene by Dolly Parton. Their rendition is slower and more haunting but still retains the feel of its predecessor; now one of Jones’s signature tracks.

She became a Blue Note artist in 2002

Norah Jones began her Blue Note career upon moving to New York City in 2002, finding a niche within the jazz scene and singing with local groups such as funk fusion group Wax Poetic as well as guitarist Charlie Hunter.

Her debut album Come Away With Me was an enormously successful release. Produced by Arif Mardin – who had worked with artists such as Dusty Springfield and Aretha Franklin – its success propelled Norah into stardom.

On her next two albums, she took on more of an active creative role when it came to songwriting; on Feels Like Home she wrote or co-wrote six out of thirteen tracks herself or co-wrote them with Danger Mouse at his Los Angeles studio and was responsible for its instrumentals as well. While critical response for Little Broken Hearts varied greatly from its commercial success, both releases received positive reviews overall.

Red Rocks Amphitheatre

Red Rocks Amphitheatre

Red Rocks Amphitheatre’s unique combination of sandstone monoliths, natural acoustics and breathtaking scenery make it a must-see destination for music enthusiasts. Famous musicians from Jimi Hendrix to U2 and Mumford & Sons have performed at Red Rocks over its lifetime; an experience you don’t want to miss!

Natural beauty makes the venue an ideal backdrop for professional photographs – just take a look at the gallery below to see for yourself!

It’s a Natural Wonder

Red Rocks is not only a concert venue; it’s also a natural spectacle. The amphitheatre’s walls were once part of the ocean floor before slowly rising due to a geological process that also formed the Rocky Mountains. Red Rocks boasts distinctive formations such as Ship Rock and Creation Rock that help produce its appealing sound.

Red Rocks was initially revered by the Ute Tribe. Later, as western expansion brought more musicians eastward, John Brisben Walker hosted concerts there on a temporary stage until members of the Civilian Conservation Corps assisted with building a permanent amphitheater nearby.

Today, the rocks remain home to an array of events ranging from music performances (ranging from legendary Phish shows and Jimi Hendrix performances to yoga classes at 6,450 feet) as well as yoga classes at 6,450 feet. As well as musical talent, you may also witness sightings of mammal species including mule deer, coyotes and mountain lions.

It’s a Historic Site

Red Rocks Amphitheatre is more than a natural wonder; it represents Colorado history.

The park features numerous giant sandstone monoliths, with Ship Rock in the north and Creation Rock in the south being among its most well-known. Both rocks boast beautiful hues and shapes while their unique acoustics create an extraordinary concert experience for concert goers.

Early 1900s Renaissance man John Brisben Walker began inviting musicians to perform on a temporary stage nestled between Ship and Creation Rocks. Over time, Denver Parks manager persuaded the city to purchase it; Denver architect Burnham Hoyt produced designs for a theater then received federal funding through Civilian Conservation Corps and Works Progress Administration programs.

Today, this venue boasts seating capacity for 9,525 and has hosted some of the biggest names in music. Additionally, the amphitheater is recognized as a National Historic Landmark and widely lauded for its sustainability goals. On non-concert days, however, locals take advantage of it to exercise or tourists to admire its sights.

It’s a Music Venue

Red Rocks’ unique combination of acoustics, scenery and setting make for an unforgettable concert experience. An impressive roster of artists have graced its stage since 1964 – from The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix to U2 and Mumford & Sons; anyone with a hit record has almost certainly graced these grounds at least once!

Visit the Visitors Center when visiting an amphitheater to gain more knowledge of its rich history, see memorabilia from past shows, and view all the awards obtained from leading music industry magazine Pollstar.

Since 1906, when its inaugural concerts took place, this amphitheater has been serving audiences. Back then it was known as The Garden of Titans, with John Brisben Walker creating temporary platforms between Ship Rock and Creation Rock – two towering formations on either side of its seating area.

It’s a Great Place to Visit

Music alone may entice visitors to Red Rocks, but the venue offers so much more for you to discover than its music alone. Amid pine tree-studded geological marvels like dinosaur fossils and hiking trails lie geological marvels like Ship Rock and Creation Rock which slope at angles up to 90 degrees; together these formations helped form the amphitheater at 6,450 feet.

Red Rocks Park’s visitor center features educational displays, a short documentary and performers’ hall of fame; you can purchase cozy Red Rocks sweatshirts and souvenirs here as well. On concert nights, this visitor center acts as the starting point for several guided tours of amphitheater stages and backstage tunnel; its surrounding area, representing both Great Plains and Rocky Mountains environments, is filled with plants and animals; hikers often make time to visit Dinosaur Ridge trail which showcases around 300 Cretaceous dinosaur footprints!
