Its History

John Brisben Walker (publisher of American magazine Cosmopolitan) created a temporary platform between Ship Rock and Creation Rock in the early 1900s and began inviting musicians to perform there, taking advantage of its amazing natural acoustics. The Beatles were the first major act to appear here in 1964; even though their concert didn’t sell out completely it became an enormously successful event that set a standard for subsequent concerts at this amphitheatre.

Burnham Hoyt, one of Denver‘s acclaimed architects, completed designing Red Rocks Amphitheatre in 1936 before Colorado’s Civilian Conservation Corps started construction five years later in 1941. Workers brought sandstone from Lyons in order to match its red hues against those found nearby and worked hard over five years to construct this 9,525-seat stadium – now called Red Rocks Amphitheatre – along with hiking equipment to create this breathtaking landscape and experience its breathtaking views.

Its Future
