Red Rocks Amphitheatre draws musicians for its breathtaking scenery and world-renowned acoustics, making it an attractive venue to record or perform their works. But not just artists are inspired by its natural beauty; many locals also consider visiting as part of rite of passage.
Red Rocks Amphitheatre, an amphitheater situated beneath towering sandstone monoliths, has become one of the world’s premier music venues. Conceived by Denver businessman John Brisben Walker in 1900, concerts began being staged at this site shortly thereafter; during the Great Depression Denver city authorities purchased it through Civilian Conservation Corps and Works Progress Administration programs, and construction began on a permanent theater by 1936.
The resultant theater is truly spectacular and its stunning acoustics have won it international renown. The vast size and dramatic formations of rock make for a magical setting that amplifies sound to make even a small audience feel as though they are up close with performers.
As such, the amphitheater has hosted many iconic concerts over its history, such as those by The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Grateful Dead and U2. Additionally, many current superstars have performed there too.
No matter why you are visiting Morrison for concerts or staying nearby, taking some time to explore its park is worth your while. The onsite Visitor Center boasts information and memorabilia about Morrison throughout its history as well as awards collected over time by this venue.
On non-concert days, the park offers guided tours at a small fee for 15-50 person groups preapproved in advance.
Visitors to the grounds can explore them on their own and it’s not unusual to find groups of friends picnicking on the steps. Picnicking is allowed during the day but must stop before certain times so performers can set up for their performances.
For those who prefer sitting, the amphitheater provides two sit-down restaurants offering BBQ, unique sausages, funnel cakes and tacos. There are also vendors selling food on event days; and you are free to bring in your own refreshments as well. Just be aware that loud music is prohibited inside and violators may face arrest.
