Norah Jones was born in New York City to sitar maestro Ravi Shankar and nurse/concert producer Sue Jones, raising in Dallas suburbia where her mother introduced her to jazz and blues through Billie Holiday recordings. Norah began piano lessons as well as singing in church choir; attending Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts where she won Down Beat Student Music Awards twice (1996) before playing alto saxophone at Booker T Washington High.
