The AMA Supercross Championship

The American Motorcycle racing series known as the AMA Supercross Championship is unquestionably one of the world’s premier off-road series, featuring 17 rounds with elite riders racing head-to-head on custom-designed tracks in some of America’s most recognizable stadiums.

Supercross courses typically feature whoop sections (brutal washboards that riders ride over), rhythm sections (irregular series of jumps offering various combinations), and banked berm turns. Riders race on cutting-edge four-stroke engines.

Beginning in Europe during the 1950s and reaching America during the 1970s, Supercross racing made its debut here under AMA Pro Racing rules in America in 1977. Ricky Carmichael, Jeremy McGrath, Travis Pastrana are just some of the champions who have found great success racing this sport. Each round in the AMA Supercross Championship features two points-paying Motos (one each for the 450 and 250 classes). Heat races or LCQs help narrow down to 22 riders before each main event begins.

The AMA Supercross Series

The American Motorcyclist Association Supercross Championship is the world’s highest-profile off-road motorcycle racing series, featuring elite riders competing against each other over 17 rounds in stadiums across America. There is both a 450cc Class and 250cc East/West Class sanctioned by this series.

Supercross stands apart from all AMA Championship series by taking the sport directly to major stadiums rather than natural landscapes such as mountains and forests. It all began in 1971 when promoters built a track inside Los Angeles Coliseum; thus creating the name “Supercross”, an amalgam of Super Bowl with Motocross.

Contrasting with Motocross events that feature two 30-minute plus 2-lap races at each round, AMA Supercross events only host a single points-paying main event that awards points and one winner at each round. Heat races and LCQs help reduce the field from around 40 riders down to 22; heat races or knockout events serve to narrow it further before crowning one champion from each event.

The AMA Supercross Schedule

Fans of AMA Supercross will witness its return to its regular format with 17 races spread out over 18 weeks starting this Saturday at Angel Stadium of Anaheim. The inaugural race of 2019 takes place this Saturday.

The 2019 AMA Supercross Schedule includes well-known stops like the Dome at America’s Center in St. Louis, Gillette Stadium in Foxborough Massachusetts, Nissan Stadium Nashville and Lincoln Financial Field Philadelphia; while new venues such as Atlanta Motor Speedway and Empower Field at Mile High Denver make debut appearances.

450SX Class features an abundance of talent with 2x champion Cooper Webb competing against Chase Sexton and Jett Lawrence for another championship title. Meanwhile, in 250SX Class rising stars Adam Cianciarulo, Ken Roczen, Marvin Musquin will all attempt to claim their first Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship crown at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City – Utah being known for sports in general! The season concludes when Salt Lake City hosts Rice-Eccles Stadium‘s season finale to crown its very own Monster Energy AMA Supercross Champion!
