Joel has sold over 160 million albums over his career and ranks sixth best-selling recording artist ever. He is also the recipient of six Grammy awards – including six Legend Awards – as well as being honored with inductions into both Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Songwriters Hall of Fame. Joel currently hosts a monthly residency at Madison Square Garden and has performed with Stevie Nicks and Sting among many others.
Rod Stewart is a two-time Grammy award recipient who has sold over 30 million albums worldwide. His most recent record, Back to Back, debuted at number one on Billboard 200 chart and was certified gold. Additionally, Rod is inducted into Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and received many other honors such as an Honorary Doctorate from University of Southern California.
City officials and representatives from LiveNation announced the concert during a news conference held Thursday afternoon, marking the first time Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Billy Joel and Rod Stewart have ever performed together live at an event.
LiveNation VP of Marketing and Sponsorship Sales Barry Gabel told 3News that concerts such as these help drive business to nearby restaurants, hotels and shopping areas; adding that it could generate up to $3 Million into the local economy.
Gabel explained the process for organizing such an event is similar to piecing together a large puzzle. Many factors come into play, including availability dates, venue space constraints, expenses related to staging the show, artist history and much more – it’s essential all pieces are in place in order to entice such an act to Cleveland.
Gabel was joined in making this announcement by Mayor Bibb and representatives from Haslam Sports Group, Destination Cleveland and LiveNation. These parties stressed the significance of this event for Cleveland as well as music fans alike; as well as how this event marks only the start of concerts at Cleveland Browns Stadium other than game days; this will mark its first concert event since 1999 when they moved there with the Browns; additionally it also houses a soccer team and will host Super Bowl 50 in 2022!
